Loved seeing this portrait yesterday of Rebecca Gratz (1781-1869) - she's not only beautiful, but you can tell that she was a lady who got things DONE. "Rebecca Gratz" by Thomas Sully, 1831, from the collection of @therosenbach; currently on display in a fascinating exhibition "The First Jewish Americans" currently at @nyhistory. From the Museum's placard: "Many of the initiatives that she promoted in Philadelphia were soon adopted elsewhere in America and beyond. In 1819, she and other women... I've always liked this portrait of a young Frenchwoman. Her serene expression and wide blue eyes belie the turbulent times in which she lived, from the French Revolution to the Empire of Napoleon Bonaparte. The yellow scarf in her hands in the only color or ornament in her dress, which is severe but very stylish. For #BlueMonday: A lovely 18thc lady in blue - Marie Fel (1713-1794), a celebrated French opera singer, drawn here in pastels by her long-time lover, Maurice Quentin de La Tour. This stunning 19thc portrait was new to me. It shows the eleven-year-old Victoria, Princess Royal (1840-1901), the oldest child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, dressed in opulent, Turkish-inspired clothing. While wearing an exotic costume for a portrait was a common conceit in 18th-19thc England and France, it's unusual to see a child's portrait, and especially an English princess. She's not just wearing a costume for a fancy-dress ball, either; she's posed in a setting that recreates an... For Day 30 of the @dames_a_la_mode #georgianjanuary with the theme of #repost Loved this portrait of Pauline Bonaparte shared originally by @dames_a_la_mode - and of course it featured jaw-dropping jewelry. For Day 29 of the @dames_a_la_mode #georgianjanuary with the theme of #artistry Do two artists double the artistry? This self-portrait by Alexander Roslin includes his wife and fellow-artist Marie-Suzanne Giroust, her box of pastels in hand. For Day 23 of the @dames_a_la_mode #GeorgianJanuary challenge with the theme of #royalty Maria Josepha Karolina Eleonore Franziska Xaveria, Duchess of Saxony and Dauphine of France, was mother of three French kings: Louis XVI, Louis XVIII, and Charles X. For #BlueMonday as well as for Day 2 of the @dames_a_la_mode #GeorgianJanuary challenge - Another self-portrait by an 18thc woman artist for the #art theme.
