There's probably more Chardonnay grown in England than many people realise... Not only is it one of the 3 classic champagne grapes, and therefore used in a lot of English sparkling wines, but a few vineyards make a pure still chardonnay or sparkling blanc de blanc, too. There are some really very nice ones out there.
"According to papers disclosed under FoI, Whitehall ordered 204 bottles of Champagne last year as opposed to just 53 in 2012. Among the fizz requested were two bottles of Louis Roederer 2000 worth £490 each, while 50 orders were put in for Heidsieck Heritage Brut at £30 each. Government spend on sparkling wine also soared, with 2013 orders tripling to 1,236 bottles compared to 360 in 2012." Let's hope that some of the sparkling was English!
