A l’occasion du bicentenaire de la naissance de l’écrivain, la Maison de Victor Hugo a demandé à Harald Szeemann de rêver Victor Hugo au présent, en mettant certains des ses dessins en « correspondances et affinités électives » avec des œuvres d’artistes modernes et contemporains. Dans le prolongement de l’exposition « Du chaos dans le pinceau.../ Victor Hugo/ dessins » (Maison de Victor Hugo, 2000), cette exposition apporte un éclairage nouveau sur l’étonnante anticipation de l’écrivain.
