The Backwards Zorro
Are you teaching your kiddos how to solve fraction of a group problems? My co-worker came up with a fabulous name for the tried and true strategy that we probably all use: The Backwards Zorro! It's visual and fun to say and it really seemed to stick in the minds of the kiddos. Here's how it works: Starting at the bottom, draw a line from the 4 to the 24 (4 goes into 24 six times). Draw the line to the 3 (six times three is 18). Draw the top line and write the answer. Presto!
Fast Fractions – Easy System
We were playing around trying to figure out an easy way to memorize the different techniques for operations on fractions last Friday in my intermediate algebra class. Suddenly this simple pattern …

Math Manipulatives and Fraction Art
I'm spending the beginning of the summer becoming more and more familiar with the CCSS for Math. Fourth grade has a LOT of fractions, so I'm looking at what kinds of manipulatives we want need for the fall. We don't have much, and we have $$ to spend for next year. Any suggestions? I especially like shopping through EAI Education and have already found a lot that our fourth grade team can use. While I was thinking about it, I thought I'd take the time to go through an activity from this past…
Equivalent Fraction Rainbows for St. Patty's Day!
Did you wear your green? I don't take any chances at school and make sure I'm wearing my green. I don't need any students trying to pinch me. This is the first year I've ever had to work St. Patrick's Day (it was always over my spring break when I lived in the Midwest!), so I'm not used to working on this day. I had a meeting and a sub in the morning and then the afternoon FLEW by, so here's a short and sweet update. Pretty simple St. Patty's Day for me... I did nothing- you heard right…

Fractions Dominoes- FREEBIE ALERT
Today I am sharing a game that has become a big favorite in our classroom – Equivalent Fraction Dominoes! My students are actually picking this game during Fun Friday – not just math time! The object of the game is to match up equivalent fractions, but I feel the most beneficial part has been them talking about what pieces work. For example, if the piece is 4/10, they might say, “I need 2/5 or 8/20”. They really help each other out, and in the process cement their learning! You can download…
What Does it REALLY Mean to Simplify a Fraction? - IgnitED
Teaching fractions to students can sometimes become complicated especially when the teacher relies on how he or she was taught fractions. I can remember when I was in school my teacher would call simplifying a fraction reducing. When I realized that I loved math so much I decided to stop teaching 5th grade math and … What Does it REALLY Mean to Simplify a Fraction? Read More »
