North and South, by Elizabeth Gaskell (March 7, 2013) Nothing to do with the American civil war, by the way. This is an English novel originally written for Charles Dickens' magazine, "Household Words." It has something of Dickens' social conscious but a love story reminiscent of "Pride and Prejudice."

North and South (Penguin Classics) - Elizabeth Gaskell was a contemporary of Dickens (and some believe he thought her the better writer). This novel is wonderful for any lover of Victorian literature. And the BBC adaption of the same is fantastic as well.

North & South by Elizabeth Gaskell. I absolutely loved this part in the book. Gaskell has such a way of making me feel Thornton's pain every time I read it.
