Forests provide a multitude of goods and services. They offer protection  against natural hazards and deliver wood and drinking water. They are a  habitat for plants and animals, as well as a space for recreation. Forests also contribute substantially to the conservation of landscape diversity and  the storage of carbon dioxide. Our workshop aims at reviewing and discussing  methods, results and policy implications of the economic valuation of forest  functions in industrialized countries.

The report, titled "Sanitation, Wastewater Management and Sustainability: From Waste Disposal to Resource Recovery," published by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), gives an overview of current knowledge and practice in wastewater management and demonstrates the opportunities for recovery and reuse of the resources found in domestic waste flows: in agriculture, energy production and other applications.

As countries become increasingly dependent on world trade, with 40 per cent of resources extracted and used worldwide linked directly or indirectly to trade, new policies are needed to address adverse environmental impacts, according to a new report.

The world's first standard for sustainable rice, which sets new and more efficient standards for rice cultivation, was launched today by the Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP), a global alliance of agricultural research institutions, agri-food businesses, public sector and civil society organizations convened by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI).

In Tajikistan, known to some as the "land of rugged mountains", agriculture provides the backbone of the economy and supports the livelihoods of two-thirds of rural communities. Yet the steep terrain that characterizes the country means that only 7 per cent of land is suitable for farming. As pressure on available land has mounted, so too have unsustainable agricultural practices, leading to depleted soils, deforestation and waning productivity.

Rwanda has undergone a remarkable economic and social reconstruction in recent years and recorded consistent growth rates of 8 per cent a year between 2001 and 2012, according to the BBC's Country Profile. The International Monetary Fund and the World Bank say that the country, along with many of its African neighbours, is entering an economic boom.
