This before and after image comes from my street painting book "My Life as a Street Painter in Florence, Italy." It shows my pastel drawing process, whether on the street or in my fine art drawings on paper or pastel boards. First is layering the colors, focusing on warm and cool, and tone. Second is the fun part: using my hands to blend the pastels to create soft edges and filled-in complex colors. The original portrait is by Carlo Dolci & was my very first street painting, "Madonna Blu."
