I caught “The Battered Bastards of Baseball” at the Los Angeles Film Fest, a documentary by Chapman and Maclain Way that caught the dream-making time in sports, filling me with a nostalgic ache, making me yearn for the straw hat days when it was fun-for-all and all-for-fun. This film is a valuable item, but unlike treasures that need to be kept in the back room safe, this story of spit-and-guts victory deserves a parade. I caught “Showfolk”, Ned McNeilage’s hilarious short documentary about Hollywood players catching the big sunset in a senior community. The subjects are infected with eternal optimism. “You order the whole pie, but you’re only given a slice. You don’t need to have it all.” This wonder screened at the LA FilmFest. It made me feel better about the upcoming seasons. By the way, if someone asks me what my religion is, I’d have to say show business. I caught Sam Esmail’s “Comet” at the Los Angeles Film Fest, an impressive journey of reconciliation, dysfunction, appreciation and most importantly, the unlimited possibilities of love. Emmy Rossum and Justin Long dance from insults to kisses, from passion to isolation, and where it leads, only the night can tell. What happens when the ground beneath your marriage starts to fall out from under you? Director Mark Webber’s ruthlessly beautiful feature, “The Ever After”, stunned audiences at the Los Angeles Film Festival. The film raises many questions, and ultimately celebrates the amazing mess we call life. Mark Webber, Movie Directors, Independent Films, Executive Producer, Ever After, Beneath, Mess, Stunning

I caught ‘Land Ho!’ at the Los Angeles Film Fest this summer, a comedy so delicious, it’s like “angels pissing on your tongue.” Two geezers hit the road—in Iceland. The first chance I get, I’m dragging my folks to see this charmer—and I’m not taking no for an answer. This movie deserves its exclamation point. Paul Eenhoorn, the understated heart of the mystically wonderful film, posed with me for a snapshot. Land Ho, One Chance, Iceland, Tongue, Understated, Comedy, Angels, Folk

A month after the LA Film Fest, and Lucy Walker’s short film still feels like a scar on my heart. Facing a medical death sentence, Marianna Palka gathers her family and friends, who accompany her into the doctor’s chamber. “The Lion’s Mouth Opens” crushed me. I was told by a stranger she was concerned about me, I was so visibly moved. Yet this documentary remains one of hope. A dream dies, but a new dream is born. Free Movies, Good Movies, Huntington Disease, Free Movie Downloads, Indie Films, Mom Died, Mouth Open, Earrings

I made the trek from Hollywood to L.A. Live to catch ‘Man From Reno’, the fantastic murder mystery that won Best Narrative Feature at the Los Angeles Film Fest. The crowded theater murmured in appreciation of the clever, subtle performances, which included the brilliant Tetsuo Kuramochi, whom I’ve known for some time. Tetsuo garnered laughter from the audience when his character made a point in Japanese about American pronunciation. Murder Mystery, Audience, Trek, Theater, Laughter, Clever, Catch
