In Appenzell Outer-Rhodes figures by the name of Beautiful, Forest and Ugly celebrate New Year on January 13th. Groups of these disguised men called Silvesterkläuse go from farmhouse to farmhouse, where they perform a special kind of yodel, and bring new years greetings. The men wear male or female masks and costumes with huge cowbells in back and front and carry enormous headdresses depicting typical local scenes. These are known as "Beautiful". The "Ugly" wear demonic masks.
