Surfing emotional waves: Instead of "Command and Demand" try "Connect and Redirect". First connect with the right brain by acknowledging feelings, physical touch, empathetic facial expressions, nurturing tone of voice, and nonjudgmental listening. Then redirect with the left brain through logical explanation, problem solving and planning. The left hemisphere is required to join the conversation which allows both sides of the brain to be used in an integrated, coordinated way.
