IM BIRCH SCHOOL location Zurich function education, primary school, secondary school Peter Märkli demonstrates that 'big' does not necessarily mean 'anonymous' but can also stand for 'dense'. With a length of 250 metres, this school in Zurich is quite a hunk. Even so, it fits into the scale of the former industrial district and can be taken in at a glance. Two four-storey volumes, slightly staggered, face each other. The third volume contains the gym, one of the biggest in town.
HEIDI WEBER MUSEUM LE CORBUSIER The Heidi Weber Museum reflects the harmonic unity of Le Corbusier's architecture, sculptures, paintings, furniture designs and his writings which is unique and possibly the only one such existing structure in the world: a total work of art. Located on the wooded shores of Lake Zurich, the last building designed by Le Corbusier, synthesizes Corbusier's genius. Yet it marks a radical change of his achievement of using concrete and stone so poetically.
SPILLMANN.ECHSLE ARCHITEKTEN Freitag started to make tarp-bags in 1993, inspired from a view onto the transit-bridge. In 2006 they decided to sell bags-made-from-tarps in a shop-made-from-containers. Completely built from 17 rusty, recycled freight-containers, selected in person in Hamburg and brought to Zurich by rail. Stacked low enough not to violate the city’s restriction on high-rise, high enough to send shivers down anyone’s spine.
