The Leap Second Is About to Rattle the Internet. But There's a Plot to Kill It

Some insiders are trying to abolish the leap second, in favor of more reliable system. But they may or may not succeed. Yes, we already have atomic clocks that don’t need leap seconds, and some standard time systems already use these clock. GPS has worked off of atomic clocks for decades, leap-second free. But some believe that UNIX and Linux, its ultra-popular clone, should continue to get their time from the leap-second-friendly UTC standard. They want man and machine to remain in line.
