Watercolour Comparisons 3 - primary red

Primary Red (and excellent Cool Red option) I use four reds in my regular palette - a warm, a cool, an earth and a crimson for convenience. You can see all these colours and many other reds in my website here. In a limited palette what you need is a red that will make oranges mixed with yellow AND purples mixed with blue. It's rather hard to find but the best options I have come across are either Quinacridone Rose (PV19, also called Permanent Rose and available in most brands), Quinacridone…

Watercolour testing - looking for a versatile three colour triad.

I have been testing and comparing a whole range of different watercolour paints and colours. It's very easy to get stuck with what you know, so I decided to see what else was available since I started using Daniel Smith back in 1995. What I want in my watercolours are mostly single pigment colours with excellent light-fastness. I prefer tube colours and I squeeze the paints into a palette to dry so they have to set in the palette and re-wet well. Once re-wet, I want them to wash out easily…

5 Types of Watercolor Charts - Type 4: Color Mixing Chart | Susan Chiang

I think of color mixing charts as a combination of the basic color chart and a color wheel . You’re taking the paints in your palette (or a selection of them) and mixing them with each other to see what colors they make. This is when you really witness the magic that is color mixing. With 6 colo

A limited palette with 6 QoR watercolours. Another with 6 Daniel Smith colours.

I tested quite a few QoR colours when they first came out in 2014 - 6 from tubes I was sent as samples and others from small dried out sample dot cards. You can see them all here. They are all on my website in the Painted Watercolour Swatches section, which is creeping to almost 800 different painted samples now. If you have some more watercolours and would like to send me a sample to paint out, please get in touch :-) I've been asked about adding some mixing information about these paints…

How to make a watercolor mixing chart step by step

There are loads of different types of color charts. And some of them are not very clearly explained. Making watercolor charts is a lot of fun and it's a very instructive exercise.

12-Color Watercolor Palette — Scratchmade Journal

What an experience these past few months have been! Three months ago when we moved from the coast to the mountains, I didn't realize that my watercolor palette would also require a major adjustment. It only took a week or two of painting to see that my coastal palette wasn't going to cut it here. After MONTHS of experimenting (I exaggerate not), I think I've nailed it, or at least built a watercolor palette that will work for me. I'm holding fast to 12 colors that seem to capture these…
