In 1919, the 'Big Three' (Lloyd-George - Britain, Georges Clemenceau - France and Woodrow Wilson - USA) met at Versailles to draw up the terms of a peace treaty. France wanted to ensure that Germany was punished and that France would never again be threatened by German agression. Britain wanted to punish Germany but did not want to weaken Germany too much as this would effect its ability to trade. The USA did not want to impose a harsh treaty and wanted to set up a League of Nations.
